Question Description: Select any situation and apply the principles of measurements in taking off Civil Engineering structures in accordance with the Civil Engineering Method of Measurements (CESMM) -Free Course Hero Question Answer
Course Hero Answer & Explanation:
CESMM stands for Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement which differ from Standard Method of Measurements (SMM) of building works. Quantity takeoff is the measurement of the materials or labor to complete the work. It is also termed as quantity surveying. The rules for measuring element and units of measurements are set in common to avoid misinterpretation and to facilitate the work. Measurement rules in the work classification set out the conditions under which the work shall be measured and the method by which the quantity be computed.
Class E: Earthworks
Excavation by dredging m3
Excavation by cuttings m3
Excavation for foundation m3
General excavation m3
Excavation ancilliaries m3
Material other than top soil
Controlled and hazardous material exposed at the commencing surface
The quantities of earthworks shall be computed net using dimensions from the drawing with no allowance for bulking, shrinkage or waste. Where boundaries between different materials are not shown on the drawings, measurements shall be made on the site.
The commencing surface adopted in the preparation of the Bill of Quantities shall be adopted for the measurement of the completed work.
Measurement of excavation by dredging shall be made from soundings unless otherwise stated.
An item shall be given for each separate stage of excavation where separate stages in the conduct of the works are expressly required.
The volume measured for the excavation of a structure or foundation shall be the volume that is to be either occupied by or vertically above any part of the structure or foundation.
An isolated volume of artificial hard material or rock occurring within other material to be excavated shall not be measured separately unless its volume exceeds 1m3 except that the minimum volume shall be 0.25m3 where the net width of excavation is less than 2m.
The volume measured within borrow pits shall be the net volume measured for filling.
Excavated material shall be deemed to be a material other than topsoil, rock, or artificial hard material unless otherwise stated in item descriptions.
Excavation in or under an embankment, executed prior to placing of fill, shall be classed as excavation for cuttings.
Excavation from within borrow pits shall be classed as general excavation.
